The Olympics: History

The Olympic games originated in Ancient Greece over 3.000 years ago in the honor of the Greek god Zeus. After Greece was conquered by the Roman Empire, the Olympic games were continued, but in its diminished capacity until it was finally banned in the 4th century AD.

First modern Olympic games reemerged at the cusp of the 19th century in Athens through the efforts of a Frenchman – Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The tradition of holding the Olympics every four years was reintroduced. This practice was upheld until the late 20th century, when in 1994 it was decided to split the Olympic games into Summer and Winter Olympics, discontinuing the four-year period and altering it into a two-year gap between each Games.

The sports and disciplines of the Olympics changed throughout its history. Some sports remained present since the Olympic Games’s inception like running, wrestling and boxing. Others were introduced to the Olympic Games as our society grew and developed. Others still vanished from the Olympic plethora of sports and disciplines due to various reasons. Tug-of-war is one such sport. In like manner, there are sports that can pride themselves with even more eventful history. Tennis is a sport that appeared at the first modern Olympic games, was later discontinued in 1924, then revived in 1988.

What sport or discipline would you like to see included next?
